Returning home from their 40th wedding aniversary trip in Hawaii after a long overnight flight into Pittsburgh, Clay’s grandparents were driving home to prepare for the Memorial Day weekend activities. A little over an hour into the hour and forty-five minute drive home, Clay’s grandfather fell asleep at the wheel. The vehicle sideswiped the guardrail before colliding head on with another vehicle. Clay was life flighted to Pittsburgh where he fought hard but was pronounced dead in the early evening of May 24, 2005.
